The know-your-camera feature for the day in infilmwetrust today is the **TLR***
Since Ally was asking about TLR, we decided that this will be the first film camera we will talk about here! thanks for helping us choose our topic for today Ally! =)
What is TLR?
TLR is an acronym for Twin Lens Reflex whereby the camera uses two lenses, one for viewing, one for taking (Twin Lens) and a mirror is used behind the viewing lenses to make focusing possible (Reflex).
So when you want to take your photo, you just look from the top and focus! the images comes out inverted so if you want to focus on an object on the right, it shows left on your screen.The experience of taking a photo using a tlr is really fun!!
A lil hist of the TLR ( summarized from www.tlr-cameras.com):
Double-lens cameras were around from about 1870 when someone realised tht hving a 2nd lense alongside the taking lens meant tht one cld look at exactly what thy are taking picture of.This same principle can be seen in SLR but compared to the TLR the early SLR was too troublesome and shaky. The TLR on the other hand was steady and firm as you could hold it firmly in your hand to take your winning shot!
The TLR uses 120mm film* and some of the well-known manufacturers of TLR are Rollei,Seagull and Yashica.
For funky cols and more convenice, you can of course now try the blackbird tlr and the holga tlr!! (loads 35mm film*)
*a lil note to our frens who are new to film : 35mm is the normal film that you use.120mm is a medium format film where you can take 12 cool square shots*
